3-Night Celebrity Reflection Cruise Packing Mistakes (And What I’d Do Differently)

by Sierra McConnell

I just got back from my first cruise on Celebrity Reflection, a 3-night sailing from Fort Lauderdale to Key West and Bimini. We stayed in an inside stateroom and traveled in February, which meant warm days, high UV, and surprisingly windy evenings on deck.

I'm a travel advisor who specializes in adults-only cruises and Disney vacations, and I am also a chronic overpacker who tried very hard to scale back for a short sailing. My husband and I both managed to only bring backpacks for our luggage, and while he did a great job with his packing, I succeeded in some ways and absolutely miscalculated in others.

Here is everything I got wrong and right packing for my 3-night Celebrity Reflection cruise, so you can skip the mistakes and keep the wins.

Things I Should Have Packed

Sunscreen That Actually Works For My Skin

As a travel advisor who tells people to prepare for this stuff, I have very little excuse here. I brought a cheap moisturizer with SPF, knowing full well that anything other than Aveeno breaks me out badly, and figured I would just buy something when I landed. Which I did, at twice the price. My face looked like I had just hit puberty for the entire trip. (And as of writing this two weeks later, I’m STILL dealing with breakouts from this!) Pack your sunscreen. Pack the one that works for your specific face.

Aveeno Protect + Hydrate Face Sunscreen with 60 SPF is my precious and I will never forget her again.

A Big Floppy Sun Hat

This would have been genuinely useful on our Key West port day when we walked around Duval Street and the Hemingway Home. My scalp was burnt by the time we got back on the ship. It also would have been useful for every deck nap I took, where I was essentially just lying in the sun with my face unprotected. A hat solves both problems.

Packable, foldable sun hat that I love and bought and left at home because I am not always the smartest.

Something Warmer Than a Jean Jacket

The ocean is windy and it got cold on the decks once the sun went down. I ended up buying a hoodie from a random beach shop in Hollywood Beach before the cruise, which was fine but not exactly a polished look. If you are going anywhere with evening deck time in February, pack a real layer.

More Magnetic Hooks

I brought two, one for me and one for my husband, and I should have brought at least four. The cabin walls are metal, so hooks stick anywhere. I used them constantly for wet swimsuits, towels, and bags after beach days. The bathroom has a few small pegs but they fill up immediately. Two between two people is not enough.

Highly rated 20-pack magnetic hooks because, seriously, you cannot have enough.

A Foldable Beach Bag

On the ship itself, a bag was not necessary. On port days, especially Bimini where we spent most of the time on the beach, having somewhere to put phones, wallets, and room keys while we were in the water was essential. I ended up Instacarting a big tote and then throwing it away on the ship because it would not fit in my carry-on. Which was annoying.

A packable tote that folds flat takes up almost no space in your luggage and eliminates this problem entirely. A mesh bag specifically is useful on beach days because it shakes out sand instead of holding onto it.

A Reusable Water Bottle

You can get water on the ship, but having your own bottle makes port days significantly easier. February in Bimini is warm and the UV was high. Dehydration sneaks up on you faster than expected when you are outside all day.

  • Owala FreeSip is my favorite insulated water bottle ever created, and it fits great in the side pocket of a backpack if you’re traveling light like me.

  • Nalgene is the OG, my rotten soldier, my sweet cheese, my good time boy. You cannot go wrong with these. What they lack in insulation they make up for in being positively indestructible.

A Beach Coverup

I forgot this completely and bought one on the ship at ship prices. If you are doing any port day with a beach, a coverup is not optional. You will want it for the walk from the water to wherever you are eating lunch.

A Slightly Less Casual Outfit

No formal nights on a 3-day Celebrity cruise, but there are nicer restaurants on the ship where you might want to look like you tried a little. I had nothing that was more than one step above beach clothes. One outfit that steps it up slightly is enough.

Things I Packed That I Did Not Need

My Own Beach Towels

This is the one I am most bitter about. I read conflicting things online, panicked, and Instacarted two beach towels to my hotel room the night before boarding. Never used them once. Celebrity provides towels for the pool, the shower, and for port days with beach excursions. I threw mine away because they would not fit back in my luggage after I had already packed everything. Do not do this.

A Full Toiletries Bag

I brought shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, deodorant, you name it. The ship provides everything but the deodorant. The Celebrity Reflection toiletries are genuinely good. Inside staterooms get C.O. Bigelow products. Higher cabin categories like AquaClass get nicer stuff. Either way, you do not need to bring your own.

My toiletries bag took up a significant chunk of my backpack for no reason. On a short cruise especially, pack only your personal items: your specific face wash, skincare, prescriptions, anything the ship would not have.

A Battery Pack (With a Caveat)

I did not need it on this trip. I would still bring one every time. Port days are long and you never know when you will need extra battery. It is small enough that bringing it costs you nothing. Keep it on your list, just do not stress if it stays in your bag the whole time. I swear by this Anker portable battery pack and (almost) never leave home without it when traveling.

Things I'm Glad I Packed

10-Foot Charging Cables

The outlets in our inside stateroom were near the desk, not beside the bed. A 10-foot cable meant I could plug in from across the room and still reach the bed. Both of us used them the entire trip. This is the most practical thing I packed and it costs almost nothing.

Anker 10-foot charging cables are pretty much all over my house, my office, and in every purse I own.

Mix-and-Match Clothes

I packed tops and bottoms that all worked with each other, which meant I got significantly more outfit combinations out of fewer items. On a short cruise with limited luggage space this is worth thinking through before you pack. If something only goes with one other thing you brought, reconsider it.

A Kindle With Multiple Books Loaded

I read more than I expected to. Like, literally three Bridgerton books (Benedict, Eloise, and Francesca, if you’re wondering) plus Bunny. There is a lot of downtime on a short cruise: sea days, deck time, waiting for things to start. One physical book would not have covered it. A Kindle with a bunch of books already downloaded is the correct move.

The Kindle Signature Edition has all the bells and whistles and is my choice as someone who is a heavy daily user, but the Kindle Standard Edition is also great.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sailing on Celebrity Reflection

Are beach towels provided on Celebrity Reflection? Yes. Celebrity provides towels for the pool, the shower, and for port days with beach excursions. Do not Instacart your own to the hotel the night before. Speaking from experience.

How many formal nights are there on a 3-night Celebrity cruise? No mandatory formal nights on a 3-day Celebrity cruise. Plenty of people still dress up, and that is totally fine. You will not be turned away from anything for skipping it.

Are magnetic hooks allowed on Celebrity ships? Yes. The cabin walls are metal and hooks work great. Bring more than you think you need.

Does Celebrity Reflection provide toiletries? Yes. What you get depends on your cabin category. Inside staterooms typically have C.O. Bigelow body wash, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and hand soap. AquaClass and above get Bulgari. Either way, leave your toiletries bag at home.

Where are the outlets in a Celebrity Reflection inside stateroom? Near the desk, not the bed. Bring a 10-foot charging cable.

TL;DR - The Short Version

  • Skip: Beach towels, full toiletries bag

  • Add: Sunscreen that works for your skin, sun hat, a real warm layer, magnetic hooks (4+), foldable beach bag, reusable water bottle, beach coverup, one slightly nicer outfit

  • Bring anyway: Battery pack, personal medications

  • Worth it: Long charging cable, Kindle, mix-and-match wardrobe planning
