Universal used to be the day you tacked onto a Disney trip.
For years, that's all it was. Two park ticket, do the Harry Potter side, back to your Disney hotel by dinner. That trip doesn't exist anymore. Epic Universe opened in May 2025, Universal rebuilt its entire ticket structure around it in 2026, and the resort now takes as much planning as Disney does.
The catch is that Universal explains itself half as clearly. There are three different Express Pass products, and the one included with your hotel doesn't work at the newest park. People find that out at the gate, after they've already paid for the hotel that was supposed to include it.

The right ticket. Three day tickets and up include multiple Epic Universe days and let you move between parks on the same day. One and two day tickets don't. That threshold decides your trip length, so it gets decided first.
The right hotel, for the right reason. Three hotels include Express Unlimited, but only at two of the three parks. The hotel at Epic Universe doesn't include it at all. Which one is right depends on where your park days actually land.
The Express Pass call. Three products, three sets of rules, and real numbers on whether it's worth it for your dates instead of a guess.
A day-by-day plan. Which park each day, what to ride first, when to eat, when to head back to the room and swim. Built around rest, not a death march.
Someone watching for changes. Refurbishments, closures, and pricing shifts between booking and arrival. Universal changes things without much warning and doesn't email you about it.

Why me and not do it yourself?
Universal's own website will happily sell you a hotel that includes Express Pass and a ticket to the park where that Express Pass doesn't work. It isn't hiding it, exactly. It just isn't going to stop you.
That's most of what I'm doing here. Knowing which rule applies at which park, what the three day ticket threshold does to your trip length, and when the answer is that you shouldn't do Universal and Disney in the same week at all. The combined trip that used to take six days now takes eight to ten, and most families are better off picking one and coming back for the other. I'll tell you which one fits your group, even when that means a smaller booking for me.

No, and this is the one that catches everybody. Portofino Bay, Hard Rock, and Royal Pacific include Express Unlimited at Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure only. Epic Universe Express is a separate purchase for every guest, no matter where you're staying.
