What a Disney travel advisor actually does (and what it costs you)

You've got two questions, and everything else is downstream of them. Does hiring someone cost me more than booking it myself, and is any of this worth it? Here are both answers, up top, no scroll required. No, it doesn't cost you extra. And whether it's worth it depends on how much you enjoy spending your evenings inside a spreadsheet named "Disney FINAL v6." Let's get into it.

How a Disney travel advisor gets paid

Short version: Disney pays me, not you. When you book a Walt Disney World trip through an advisor, the price is the same as booking it yourself on Disney's site. Same rooms, same tickets, same everything. Disney pays advisors a commission out of its own margin, the way a hotel pays a booking site. You're not a line item in that. You pay Disney's published price, I get paid by Disney, and the two have nothing to do with each other.

So the "do Disney travel agents cost extra" question has a boring answer, which is no. If someone's charging you a markup on Disney's own prices, that isn't how this works, and you should ask questions.

Do Disney travel advisors charge a planning fee?

Some do. I don't, not for Disney World or cruises. My planning work on those is covered by the commission the supplier pays, so you get the strategy, the reservations, and the babysitting of your booking for exactly zero dollars beyond the trip itself. (Custom trips that aren't supplier-commissioned are the one exception, and I'll tell you before a single dollar moves. No surprises.)

That's the cost question closed. Now the real one.

So what am I actually doing for free?

Booking the trip is the least of it. Anyone can put a room and tickets in a cart. What you're hiring is the person who does the annoying, time-sensitive, easy-to-botch parts so you don't lose a Tuesday night to them. That includes:

  • Picking the right resort for how your family actually travels, not the one with the prettiest lobby photos. There are more than 25 of them, they are not interchangeable, and "value resort" means something specific that you'll feel at 6am when the bus is packed.

  • Building a park plan that matches your crowd tolerance, your kids' meltdown schedule, and the fact that you are not, in fact, going to rope drop every single day no matter what the influencer told you.

  • Handling dining. Disney reservations open 60 days out and the good ones vanish in minutes. I'm the one setting an alarm for that. You're asleep.

  • Working Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Single Pass so you're not standing in the sun re-reading a Reddit thread about which rides to prioritize.

  • Rebooking your trip when a better discount drops after you've already paid. This is the one nobody tells you about. Disney releases promotions constantly, and an advisor watches for them and reapplies them to your existing reservation. That one thing has covered whole dining budgets.

And the part that doesn't fit on a feature list: being the person who picks up when it goes sideways at 9pm the night before, or mid-trip when a park closes for weather and your whole day just moved. You text me. I fix it. You don't sit on hold.

When you shouldn't hire me

I'd rather say this now than have you resent me later. You don't need an advisor if you love the planning, you've done Disney recently, you're doing a short simple trip with no dining or Lightning Lane strategy to speak of, and the logistics actually relax you. Some people find the spreadsheet soothing. I respect it. Go in peace.

You probably do want one if it's your first big Disney trip, you're wrangling a group or multiple generations, you're traveling with a kid who has specific needs, you're pattern-blind to the pricing tricks, or you simply have a job and a life and would prefer to spend neither of them on this.

How working together actually goes

It isn't complicated. You reach out and tell me who's going, roughly when, and what you're hoping for. I come back with a plan and a real recommendation, not five options and a shrug. You approve it, I book it, and then I stay on it (discounts, reservations, changes) all the way through your trip. You get a human, not a chatbot and a confirmation email.
