What to Expect at Walt Disney World in October 2026
October at Walt Disney World used to be a secret. Low crowds, great weather, Halloween parties.
That was maybe 2015.
The secret is out now, and the crowds reflect it. It's not the value play it once was. It's still a very good time to visit.
The Weather at WDW in October
Average highs drop to 82 to 85 degrees. Humidity falls noticeably. Afternoon storms become less frequent, especially in the back half of the month. Mornings are pleasant. Evenings are genuinely nice.
This is the first month since April where you can comfortably be in the parks from opening to close without a midday retreat. That alone changes the experience.
Pack for warm days and mild evenings. Bring a hoodie for after dark, especially if you're doing any late-night party dates. A cold front can push through in late October and nights can get into the low 60s.
Walt Disney World Crowds in October
Yet another thing influencers destroyed by making videos about ~hidden gems~
October crowds sit around 6 to 8 out of 10, per TouringPlans. That's a meaningful jump from September, driven by three things.
Fall break. A significant portion of school districts schedule fall break in October, and families who can't travel in summer use this window.
Convention season. Orlando's convention calendar fills in October. Groups not going to the parks still take up resort rooms, restaurants, and buses.
Party demand. MNSSHP runs 16 nights in October, and the spillover effect is real. Day guests bunch into fewer regular-hours days, which makes non-party days busier than the total attendance numbers suggest.
Weekdays beat weekends. The last week of October is the busiest stretch of the month.

Food and Wine 2026 runs August 27 through November 21, so October is right in the middle of the festival's run. All marketplace booths are open, Eat to the Beat concerts run nightly at America Gardens Theatre, and the festival is fully mature at this point. Any opening-week kinks are long resolved.
If you’re really excited to see a performer at Eat to the Beat, use my personal mistake and learn from it: Either get there REALLY early or book a Concert Series Dining Package. This will guarantee you get seating and a good meal beforehand. (Spice Road Table in the Morocco Pavilion is one of my all-time favorites on property.)
EPCOT gets crowded on weekend evenings when locals come specifically for Food and Wine. Weekday evenings move faster. Plan your World Showcase laps accordingly.
Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party
October 2026 MNSSHP dates: 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 9, 13, 15, 16, 18, 22, 23, 25, 27, 29, 31.
Sixteen nights. The party runs on more than half the nights in October.

A few things that matter for planning:
On party nights, Magic Kingdom closes to regular day guests at 6pm. Not 7pm. 7pm is when the party officially starts. Party ticket holders can enter as early as 4pm, which is three hours of bonus park time before the event begins. If you're buying a ticket, plan to arrive at 4pm. Get your headliners done during that window, then let the party take over.
October parties run busier than September ones. More guests in costume, more energy, more competition for parade spots. October 31 specifically. That date sold out before 9am on the morning general tickets went on sale, which is a record. If Halloween night is the goal, you may already be too late.
If you're buying for October, target the first week. Dates 1, 2, 4, or 8 will be less crowded than anything after October 20. They're also cheaper. The experience is the same.
Tickets are $119 to $229 per person depending on the date. No Lightning Lane during party hours, but wait times for most attractions are significantly lower than a standard park day.
What's Closed
Carousel of Progress closed July 6 for a full reimagining and won't reopen until sometime in 2027. Everything else is running. Of course, always check the My Disney Experience app for up-to-date information.
Beyond the Parks
Fort Wilderness does a campground Halloween celebration through October. Decorations, trick-or-treating, costume contests. Worth knowing about if you're in that area.
Disney Springs adds Halloween merchandise and seasonal dining through the month. The resorts transition toward fall theming in common areas.
Strategy for Doing Disney World in October
Go early in the month. October 1 through 8 carries some of September's lower attendance. By mid-month, fall break crowds are in full swing. By Halloween week, you're at the peak.
Use EPCOT as your evening park. The EPCOT International Food and Wine Festival gives you a reason to be there every night, and EPCOT handles crowds better than Magic Kingdom. More space, better flow, and you're not competing with party energy next door.
Book MNSSHP early in the month if possible. October 1, 2, or 4 will be less crowded than October 29 or 31. The parade, the fireworks, the trick-or-treating. It's all the same event. The lines are shorter.
Don't skip Animal Kingdom. Everyone is focused on EPCOT for Food and Wine and Magic Kingdom for MNSSHP. Animal Kingdom is the overlooked park in October, which means it's the one with the shortest waits. Flight of Passage at 20 minutes is a completely different ride than Flight of Passage at 90.
Bring a layer for evenings. You want shorts at 2pm and a hoodie at 10pm. October after dark cools faster than most people expect.
Who should actually visit in October
People who want the full Halloween experience. If MNSSHP is the priority and you want the seasonal atmosphere to match the party, October is right. September parties are the same event. They don't have the fall feeling outside the park gates.
Families with fall break as their only window. October at Walt Disney World is just truly a good time to be there. It's not the empty-park experience some blog posts from 2018 promised, but it's genuinely better than, like, May.
People who run hot. If Florida heat is a dealbreaker, October is the first month where you can do a full park day without the weather working against you. Usually. Climate change has us sweating in February. (And if you need some recommendations for how to survive the heat, check out my hot weather packing list here.)
The bottom line
October at Walt Disney World is no longer a secret, but it's still one of the stronger months on the calendar. The weather finally cooperates, Food and Wine is in full swing, and Halloween parties run at maximum frequency. You'll deal with higher crowds than September, but you're getting the full fall experience in return.
If crowd levels are the priority, go in September. If atmosphere and weather and Halloween are what you're after, October earns it.

Not locked into October? November and December could also be a good option for you, but you’ll be up against holiday crowds (and flight prices). November is personally my favorite time of year to be in the parks!
